Have you ever reached the end of the day and wondered if anything you did really mattered?
You made the meals, answered the emails, folded another load of laundry, cared for your family, checked another item off your to-do list, and before long, the day was over. Then you woke up the next morning and did pretty much all of it again.
Most of life isn’t made up of the big moments. It’s lived in the countless little things that fill our days—things that often go unnoticed by everyone but the Lord.
It’s easy to become so focused on the work in front of us that we lose sight of what God is doing through it. I know how often I need that reminder.
But Scripture reminds us of something we so easily forget.
God Is at Work in the Ordinary
One of the passages the Lord has often brought me back to is Colossians 3. Paul writes,
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (Colossians 3:23).
I love those first three words: whatever you do.
God doesn’t divide our lives into “important” work and “ordinary” work. He simply says, whatever you do.
Whether you’re caring for your family, serving at your job, welcoming others into your home, or simply carrying out the responsibilities God has entrusted to you, every part of life belongs to Him.
The Lord never overlooks even the smallest act of obedience done for His glory.
God Is Doing More Than We Can See
It’s easy to measure our days by what we accomplish. But the Lord is doing far more than helping us have productive days.
Romans 8:28 reminds us that God is working all things together for the good of those who love Him. Then Paul tells us what that “good” is in the very next verse:
“…to be conformed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:29).
One of the sweetest reminders the Lord has brought to my own heart is that He isn’t only using the work He’s given us to do—He’s also using it to change us.
The interruptions that test our patience, the responsibilities that fill our days, and the days that don’t go as planned are often the very places where He is teaching us to depend on Him. He’s patiently changing our hearts and making us more like Christ.
From our perspective, it may seem like we’ve simply made another meal or answered another email. But the Lord sees something much bigger taking place. He’s continuing to make us more like Christ.
Remembering What Is True
Remembering this changes the way we look at the day before us.
Instead of asking, “Why do I have to do this again?” we can begin asking, “Lord, how can I honor You as I do this today?”
The things before us today may not change, but the way we look at them can.
The next time you’re washing the dishes or running errands, remember that God is present in that moment too. He sees you and is using even the things He’s given you to do today to accomplish His good purposes.
The Lord Sees What Others Don’t
Tomorrow will probably look much like today.
There will still be people to love, meals to prepare, messes to clean up, errands to run, and things that need your attention.
But don’t overlook those moments.
The Lord certainly doesn’t.
He has entrusted you to bring glory to His name and to make you more like Christ.
Friend, don’t overlook the day the Lord has given you. He is at work even when you can’t see all that He is accomplishing. As you love and serve the people He has entrusted to you, He is also changing you into the likeness of His Son. So tomorrow, when another ordinary day begins, remember that it isn’t ordinary to Him.
