Hi Mom,
What Bible stories captured your attention as a child? The stories dramatized on Sunday school felt boards often featured Noah and his ark, David and Goliath, and Paul traveling on his missionary journeys. And rightly so! These stories depict giants of our faith. But the Bible also elevates women—faith-filled adventurers who lead, make brave decisions, and risk everything to follow God.
Miriam was one of those courageous women of the Bible. Growing up as a slave girl, Miriam learned how to be brave—and smart. When her baby brother, Moses, was in grave danger, Miriam and her mom saved his life and even helped him to become a prince in Egypt.
As Miriam matured, she became a gifted musician and discovered other God-given talents. And when God called Moses to lead his people out of slavery in Egypt, Miriam was there, helping to guide them.
There are many more bold women of the Bible whose stories need to be told. They were disciples, political and spiritual leaders, philanthropists, moms, businesspeople, evangelists, prophets, and so much more. These women faced overwhelming odds, finding strength, faith, and courage to join God’s story. They were heroes of the faith, just like Noah, David, or Paul.
Our prayer is that your child would answer God’s calling to discover and use his or her talents, passions, and gifts to journey with Him on a lifelong adventure. God is calling every courageous hero—boys and girls—to arise, trust in Him, and join the Greatest Story.
Here are a few questions you can ask your child to spark some discussion about women’s roles in the Bible and in today’s world:
What women of the Bible can you think of and what made them special?
Miriam helped her mother keep her baby brother safe and later helped Moses lead God’s people. When we help others, we serve God. In what ways have you helped someone in your family?
As Miriam grew, she became a leader in her community. Can you think of other women who are leaders like Miriam?
If you believe that God is calling us to recognize the incredible contributions of women in the Bible, we want to invite you to take part in a very special opportunity. When you order a copy of A Brave Big Sister: A Bible Story About Miriam, we will donate a matching copy to a young child. Let’s spread Miriam’s message to as many kids as possible.
