Three Prayers for the Start of the School Year

I sent my kids off to school on two different buses this year. My oldest headed to middle school for the first time. This means he’s changing classrooms every hour, navigating a new social scene, and learning to stand strong amidst peer pressure.

As if I didn’t already have reason to pray for my kids, this new phase has launched my prayer life into overdrive.

No matter the ages of your kids, the start of the school year can be a time of celebration but also worry. Will your child find good friends? Will he have an encouraging teacher? Will she do what’s right even if no one else does?

Mamas, rather than fret and fear, let’s turn to the One who sees our kiddos every minute of every day. Here are three prayers you can pray right now—one for your child, one for his or her educators, and one for yourself.

Prayer for Your Child

Lord, I’m so grateful You see everything that happens during the school day, and You’re with my child right now. I lift him (her) up to You and ask You to give him (her) confidence in the learning process. Remove any barriers of understanding and help him (her) to not be afraid to ask for help when needed. Provide good friends who will encourage my son (daughter) toward right living and help him (her) to be a good friend in return. Give him (her) eyes to see those who may feel alone and forgotten and fill him (her) with Your love. I pray that all interactions with his (her) teacher would be respectful and open to feedback. Thank You for the honor of parenting my child and guiding him (her) through this next school year. In Jesus’s name, amen.

Prayer for Your Child’s Teachers

Lord, thank You for those who are serving in schools to equip and educate the next generation. I pray for strength for my child’s teachers today. As they start a new school year, give them excitement and energy to cast a vision for the classroom. Help them to remain aware of each child and the unique needs that are represented. I pray for mutual respect between my child and his (her) teachers. Fill them with love and understanding. As the school year wears on and energy may fade, renew each teacher with an extra portion of Your strength. Keep them focused on the ultimate goal of inspiring young minds. Help me be a light and support to my child’s teachers however possible. In Jesus’s name, amen.

Prayer for You

Lord, it’s such a privilege to raise my child and to partner with his (her) school in education. As we start a new year, fill me with encouragement and love. Help me guide my child toward his (her) full potential, but also give me wisdom to recognize when grace is needed most. Where trouble spots may exist—whether with academics, friends, or choices—reveal what needs to come to light, and help me navigate each situation with love and patience. Show me where I can partner with my child’s school and teachers to support and encourage the education process. Most of all, enable me to release my child into Your hands. I trust that You know what’s best for him (her), and I don’t want to hinder Your work by overstepping my role. At the same time, I pray for wisdom to know the right boundaries to set in place and for courage to stand firm when needed. Thank You for walking beside and before me as I lead my child through this school year. In Jesus’ name, amen.
