Many parents begin with a beautiful vision for family life. They imagine a home filled with connection, curiosity, meaningful conversations, and the joy of watching their children grow. My husband and I started our own journey into parenthood with clear purpose, taking time when our children were young to write down the values and verses that would guide our family.
And these values would hold us steady as we went through rocky times as a family. We would cling tightly to them during tough years of nurturing a daughter through a season of seizures and learning difficulties. The verses we held to would be an anchor for us when our missionary adventure inevitably held hardships and loneliness.
Ultimately, it was our attention to the way Jesus lived with vision that helped us to stay true to the intentionality in parenting that we felt called to. Hebrews 12:2 says that Jesus looked to the joy set before him to endure the cross, and we are to look to him for the clarity of vision that enables us to endure our own difficulties: “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
When we look at the life of Jesus, we see someone who lived with incredible vision and purpose. He was never rushed by the demands around Him. He was never distracted from His mission. He lived each day with clarity, love, and intention—and He modeled the kind of life of presence and attunement we want to cultivate in our homes.
When you decide to clarify your vision for your family, you are modeling your life upon the life of Jesus, but we must remember that a life of purpose is often lived on a rising scale of difficulty. Still, when we keep the joy of the Lord as our focus, we can continue to remain steady in the face of trials. We don’t control the outcome of our family life, but our faithfulness will be remembered by our children and will be an anchor for them as they one day begin their own journey with the Lord.
