Walking in the way of wisdom: A trail guide from God’s word

As you consider your current path, may these reflections from the King James Version of Proverbs serve as field markers to guide you toward God’s good and perfect will. When You Stumble I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble (Proverbs 4:11-12). If we need a recipe for a good, stumble-free life, with our feet set on a straight path, we need only heed ... [keep reading]

He is risen! Celebrate with a charcuterie board

We love to gather for a special Resurrection Sunday brunch after church. It’s so fun to see the little ones dressed up and full of sugar energy. Faith, family, and the farm have always been our focus at the Grace-Filled Homestead, and this festive board helps us celebrate our Savior, spring blooms, and baby birds. It’s filled with delicious veggies, meats, candies, and our adorable deviled eggs in the shape of baby chicks. The final touch is our Bird’s Nest Cookies that are beyond delicious. ... 10 ways to live seasonally from seed to table

We can restore our connection to seasonal living and cultivate our own food security and self-reliance in many ways. While Italy provides one example we can mirror, it’s my intent that From Seed to Table cultivates what we see God intended for us in 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12: that we live a quiet life, mind our own business, work with our hands, and no longer need to depend on others. The latter includes not depending on a broken system for daily nourishment. It is my hope that this ... [keep reading]

Celebrate simply with this strawberry shortcake

My perspective on celebration shifted when I realized that the parties I hosted or attended weren’t enjoyable or special because of the theme or the decorations or all the money I spent or the elaborate desserts. It was the simple things, like hosting a honey roast, playing a simple game, or making a handmade birthday banner. The one thing that made everyone feel special was a simple but homemade dessert. The dessert represented forethought, time, and love. Thinking about what kind of dessert ... [keep reading]

Engaging elders: 5 tips to involve grandparents in homeschooling

Many homeschool parents carry the burden of educating their child alone. With the recent surge of homeschool families, often the parents are the first generation on this educational journey. Choosing the right curriculum, customizing learning for your child, and explaining your decisions to friends and family seem to take center stage. In most families the grandparents are not familiar with homeschooling and don’t know how to help. When grandparents are educated on the benefits, brought into ... [keep reading]

A sacred Valentine’s Day: history, faith, and a sweet recipe

While Valentine's Day is one of the most popular saint days in our culture, very little is known about the man Valentine, and the legends may be a conflation of two different people. He is said to have been a faithful bishop in Terni, Italy, when Christianity was still illegal. Despite the danger, Valentine passionately shared the gospel and aided persecuted Christians. Supposedly, he also officiated a number of Christian marriages during a time when many young men who were drafted into the ... [keep reading]

Making space: The journey from house to home

The purpose of our placemaking shifted with the seasons and with the growth of our children. In the early days, we opened the many doors here at Maplehurst with abandon. Front door, back door, garden-side kitchen door, barn-side kitchen door—we flung them all open and hosted other people constantly, sometimes strangers, sometimes friends. When families came, we tossed our children in together and watched how quickly they learned to play hide-and-seek on all three floors of the house or ... [keep reading]

Finding Christ’s peace in a chaotic world

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 Right now as I write this devotional, there are two major ongoing events that threaten the stability of large portions of the world and international relations. And people everywhere are surrounded by utter chaos of one kind or another. But I don’t ... [keep reading]

Christmas is coming: What Simeon teaches us about waiting

Luke 2:25-35 When you think about the first Christmas, what names come to mind? Jesus, of course, and Mary and Joseph, and if you want to get really creative, you could include Caesar Augustus, since his name appears at the beginning of Luke 2. These are certainly the most familiar names from the first Christmas, but later in the chapter, we read about a less well-known man who happens to have a lot in common with us. “Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man ...
